Texas high court declines to decide if embryos are people or property

    https://wapo.st/4bYvNKl

HOUSTON — The Texas Supreme Court on Friday declined to consider whether frozen embryos are people or property in the eyes of the law — a ruling that could have had dramatic consequences in a state where in vitro fertilization is booming.

The case came about as divorced couple fight over who gets possession/custody of frozen embryos left over from previous IVF procedure.

Religious conservatives are coming out hot against IVF. Trump and the Republican Party are in trouble

But just as Britt and Cruz were speaking, the Southern Baptist Convention voted on a resolution that denounced IVF. Their denunciation was based on the practice — normal during IVF treatment — of creating multiple embryos that could be potentially used in the future but many of which could be destroyed.

Democrats only began talking about IVF after an Alabama Supreme Court ruling classified frozen embryos as children under state law. That Alabama ruling mentioned Dobbs v Jackson, the US Supreme Court ruling that killed Roe v Wade, which came because of Supreme Court justices that Trump nominated and Cruz voted to confirm.

The whole episode shows how almost two years after the Dobbs case, Republicans have still not figured out how to talk about abortion — and there are few signs they will figure it out soon.

I'll never understand the machinations of voting on things in the Congress.

Rick Scott has a different take from the New York Times.

Politics. The Democrat knew there was no chance of getting 60(?) votes to pass it.

Sen. Ted Cruz tried to do a voice vote on some similar but different bill and the Democrats did not allow the vote.

Just something that they (Democrat) can use in an ad or compaign speech, even though it is a bit out of context.

IVF is much more commonly used than I think folks realize. From what I've heard from friends and coworkers, it almost feels like 1 in 3 women have used IVF or other infertility treatments. Maybe there's a fertility epidemic going on that we're not aware of (I blame 5G towers!!!!!!111) or maybe it's just because women are waiting until they are older now.

                Global IVF Use:

                • In 2021, around 2.5 million IVF cycles were performed globally, leading to the birth of approximately 500,000 babies annually.
                • In countries like the United States, over 2% of all babies born each year are conceived using IVF or other forms of ART. In countries like Denmark or Israel, this percentage is higher, closer to 5-7%.

                Frequency of IVF Use:

                • IVF is particularly common among individuals facing infertility issues (both male and female), older individuals or couples, same-sex couples, and single women who wish to have a child.
                • According to the CDC, approximately 330,000 IVF cycles are performed annually in the U.S., leading to about 80,000 live births.
