Speaking as somebody who holds many Libertarian positions, Libertarians are nuts. I don’t mean that they hold untenable positions, I mean they are insane. That’s where you will find the flat earthers and such.

Kat Timpf, who works for FOX, is a Libertarian.

She's not dumb. Magna Cum Laude from Hillsdale, where she attended on scholarship and was editor of the school paper. But...Let Kat talk long enough, and she may not be Flat Earth, but she's a quarter-bubble off plumb. She brings up some interesting points, but so many of them are simply unworkable.

Maybe it should be called the contrarian party.

The people I know who are libertarian tend to be quite smart but really out there - their views are weird on a whole lot of things outside politics. I hesitate to use the phrase ‘on the spectrum’ as it’s a bit of a cliche but that’s where they are.

I similarly struggle with my own inner libertarian ideals. Perhaps it’s more small “a” anarchism than libertarianism. I do not know.

A couple of years back I came across the following description of libertarians. I don’t think it is off the mark:

[Libertarians are like] House cats. They are convinced if their fierce independence while utterly dependent on a system they don’t appreciate or understand.

There are as many flavors of libertarianism as there are people who call themselves libertarians. I appreciate the direction of the ideology mostly.

The least amount of government interference in citizens lives as is workable. Works for me.

But yeah, when you have party leaders who call themselves Vermin Supreme, well, as Lennon said, “if you go carrying pictures of chairman Mao, you ain’t gonna make it with anyone anyhow”

As do I, however the vast majority of self professed libertarians I have encountered or know fall into the house cat variety or, as you say, flavour.

They are staunch libertarians until such time they feel that it’s time for their dinner.

I think there are a fair number of libertarians that support the ideals because it will allow them to partake in whatever their vice of choice is. That’s why so many porn professionals are active in the party.

The George Mason economics department is mostly libertarian, with public intellectuals who self-identify as libertarian including Tyler Cowen, Bryan Caplan, and Robin Hanson. Even they had an internal divide during COVID, where Cowen was more for lock-downs and the others not so much. Stress will bring out differences.

Yes but those are the kind of libertarians who read Robert Nozick and Frederick von Hayek.

None of them would consider RFK or DJT to be libertarian.

President Trump not very well received. But no surprise. It does say that he must be concerned that Mr. Kennedy may be taking some votes from him.

I read that Trump vowed to commute Ross Ulbricht's sentence if he's elected. Ulbricht is the guy who set up the "silk road" black market for drugs on the dark web, and will be spending the rest of his life in prison without a commutation. He was also conned into attempts to hire assassins to take out some business enemies.
