I'm hoping to get to it this weekend. I loved the first movie - I've watched it three times already.

    Be sure to do IMAX.

We're off to the Providence IMAX for a date tomorrow. We may even dine extravagantly at the mall food-court beforehand.

    I was only joking

      "Dune Prophecy"

Currently expected to arrive on Max in the fall this year, Dune: Prophecy will serve as a prequel series to Denis Villeneuve's critically acclaimed movie adaptations of Frank Hebert’s novels. Set thousands of years before the rise of Paul Atreides, the upcoming spinoff show will chart the origins of the mysterious and influential order known as the Bene Gesserit.

While the original Dune author Frank Herbert only penned six novels set in his expansive science fiction universe, the franchise has since expanded to include a total of 23 novels and 13 short stories spanning some 15,000 years of history. Widely regarded as one of the most influential and intricately detailed science fiction properties, current and previous film and television adaptations have only begun to scratch the surface of Dune’s true potential.

While Villeneuve is adamant that his plans for the Dune franchise will end after Dune: Messiah, Warner Bros. may want to continue exploring Herbert’s sci-fi universe long after his departure. Moreover, with Dune: Prophecy introducing a corner of the Dune universe that existed millennia before Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides ever set foot on Arrakis, it could also potentially pave the way for countless potential spinoffs to follow.

Are they going to base it off the Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson books?

MUCH better day today. Out to lunch with my bride, down to pick up a case of wine in the city and all the while listening to my favorite NPR show, Science Friday.

One of today's topics was could Arrakis exist? Where would the oxygen come from on an all-sand desert world? What creatures could exist for the sandworms and humanoids to eat? How did they not need water?

Pro tip: springing for the extra spring roll is fine but avoid the temptation to supersize the soda even if it looks like a good deal. Dune is a long movie and you want to reduce the probability of needing a bathroom break during the movie.

Sand is silicon dioxide, so there is an abundance of oxygen on an all-sand world.

Can probably make up some story about microorganisms too small to be seen by the naked eye, and make them he bottom of the food chain in the desert much like plankton is the bottom of the food chain in the sea. :man-shrugging:

Is that from the “Schools of Dune” trilogy? I can’t say that I read those or the House books. Are they set about halfway between Vorian and Leto?

Wait, it’s only 80 years after the end of the Jihad? So Vorian’s probably still active?

If she’s walking because of Irulan, then I don’t think these guys understood the characters at all.

I got the distinct impression that's what it was.

Paul goes into this "I'll always love you" speech, and within 1 minute, turns to the Emperor and says "I marry Irulan or you die." Chani storms out, and summons Shai-Hulud.

                                        Jesus Muad' Dib.

As I mentioned, there are some real liberties taken with the story. Because it's such massive work, I understand the need to be selective about what's shown.

But I don't understand some of the stuff, like not putting Fred's poison into the duel.

On the other hand, if I hadn't read the book, I would have thought this was a really great tale, well-told. That thought crossed my mind several times during the movie.

Meh, not so sure. Finally watched Dune 2 with Karla and Lucas and they were confused as hell.

I suppose, having read the book several times, I can get that. You can't erase what you already know.

What did they find confusing, the "Water of Life", Jessica's transformation?

The saying, "Lite is just one damn thing after another," is a gross understatement. The damn things overlap.
