Sorry, no sale. My banking is a private transaction and should remain that way. If the bank wishes to use the data they collect internally, that's one thing and should be subject to some limitations. if they wish to turn iot over to government that's a whole different animal.

So if Bank of America sees a transaction that says "Use funds to hijack planes", they aren't supposed to inform the FBI?

        Just spitballin' here.

Do you think that they monitored Quran purchases?

Asking for a friend, of course.

I’d imagine it’s not, but did you see the document that listed the keywords such as MAGA? The document in the article doesn’t show that separate keyword list.

From what I can tell this isn’t the government search or seizing anything, it’s advising banks on what typology patterns might be relevant warning signs.

The Bible thing is an even clearer example this is a political article and letter. The actual claim is this:

the purchase of books (including religious texts) and subscriptions to other media containing extremist views

Jordan makes it sound like Bible purchases are being monitored by the government.

              Which is 100% untrue.

In many places the bible still is considered extremist.

So, they're flagging books (including religious texts (presumably the Quran is included)) and subscriptions that contain extremist views.

Who decides what are extremist views?

Who decides what can be tracked?

What's the probable cause for these searches?

Where's the warrant presented to Bank of America for searching anyone who happened to make a purchase in DC Jan 5-7, 2001?

No, it’s not. Your example was someone stating they intended to commit a violent crime. Any person of integrity would report that. There’s a universe of difference between that and someone telling you they intend to purchase Mein Kampf or flying lessons, both of which could portend trouble or simply curiosity and ambition.

The government is not doing the searching. That’s the whole point.

The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) has provided banks with typology keywords that could present a pattern that might be worth flagging. Such as transactions related to the Qoran and AR15s and bombs, or MAGA and weapons. And if a pattern emerges, it might be worth checking out. This is the bank monitoring for criminally related financial activity.

I'm aware of that, but the question is how far should it be allowed to go?
