Private/public companies have the right to analyze their data however they want, including flagging questionable usage by customers. If the government provides a list of keywords to help, so be it. Unless I don't understand the scenario correctly. It's not like the FBI is watching live bank transactions and then arresting someone or preventing the transaction anytime they see the keyword TRUMP.

All you need to look at is the rampant abuse of asset forfeiture to know why you should not trust them. It was meant to seize provable ill-gotten gains, but they forgot they should have to prove they are in fact ill-gotten, not that you should have to prove they are not.

I have a few buddies who are special agents at the FBI, there are many attacks they stop that you'll never hear of. It's pretty incredible. Admittedly I am biased by their work ethic and morals and the good work they do...

          4th Amendment.

          Read Jordan's letter.

"According to this analysis, FinCEN warned financial institutions of "extremism" indicators that include "transportation charges, such as bus tickets, rental cars, or plane tickets, for travel to areas with no apparent purpose," or "the purchase of books (including religious texts) and subscriptions to other media containing extremist views."' In other words, FinCEN urged large financial institutions to comb through the private transactions of their customers for suspicious charges on the basis of protected political and religious expression."

Damn, don't you dare use your credit card to buy a bible, you knuckle-dragging deplorable MAGAT.

And God forbid you go to Cabela's.

            No argument.

Have them explain how this is not a 4th amendment violation, how the government obtained records without a warrant.

Sorry, no sale. My banking is a private transaction and should remain that way. If the bank wishes to use the data they collect internally, that's one thing and should be subject to some limitations. if they wish to turn iot over to government that's a whole different animal.

So if Bank of America sees a transaction that says "Use funds to hijack planes", they aren't supposed to inform the FBI?

                From t3h constitution:

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

I'm not sure where I see in Jordan's letter where the government is unreasonably searching/seizing a person's papers or effects by telling banks what patterns of extremism to look for. It's typology 101.

In a more simple example, it might be like the FBI telling U-Haul how to look out for people asking if a certain truck can carry 1,000 pounds of TNT.

                      Who is being hanged?

It seems these letters only were drafted because the snowflake's feelings were hurt that the acronym 'MAGA' dare be included in a list of potential threat identifiers. I would hope 'BLM' is also included as a keyword, btw.

I’d imagine it’s not, but did you see the document that listed the keywords such as MAGA? The document in the article doesn’t show that separate keyword list.

That's ridiculous and not at all what we are talking about.

I believe it is. Banks using their access to data to flag suspicious activity. Whether it’s a pattern of words such as AR15 school, or MAGA antigovernment attack, or bomb parts enshallah…

From what I can tell this isn’t the government search or seizing anything, it’s advising banks on what typology patterns might be relevant warning signs.

Do you think that they monitored Quran purchases?

Asking for a friend, of course.

The Bible thing is an even clearer example this is a political article and letter. The actual claim is this:

the purchase of books (including religious texts) and subscriptions to other media containing extremist views

Jordan makes it sound like Bible purchases are being monitored by the government.

                                      Which is 100% untrue.

In many places the bible still is considered extremist.

So, they're flagging books (including religious texts (presumably the Quran is included)) and subscriptions that contain extremist views.

Who decides what are extremist views?

Who decides what can be tracked?

What's the probable cause for these searches?

Where's the warrant presented to Bank of America for searching anyone who happened to make a purchase in DC Jan 5-7, 2001?
