I'm amazed 9 year old tablets sell for that much.

    Education is extremely important.

Same. Or as a middle ground, you could work with her on how to use it without it failing. If she brings it back, she won't find an iPad for $110 for her daughter. She sounds sincere and, if so, it would be some (moar) good you could add to the world.

That being said, if she tells you her daughter is under the age of 10, then tell her kids shouldn't have electronics until they are 30 and mumble bah humbug as you leave.

So you are saying the tablet is technically OK and the only complaint is that new software isn't supported?

It's her problem, not yours. She can sell it herself if she can't use it.

Klaus is right, of course, but still I’d be thinking about the little girl, take it back, and resell it myself with an explicit paragraph making clear what to expect from an old iPad.

Meanwhile mom still has 2 weeks and $110 dollars to shop for her.

I mean, this isn’t a scammer you’re dealing with. She’s just not knowledgeable about technology.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

You are perfectly in the right to not take the return.

I’d still take it back. It would be salvaging this woman and her daughter’s Christmas at the cost of a little inconvenience to refund her and resell it again.

Yeh, I slept on it. I'll email her and let her know that I'll take it back.

You can be right and still be an a-hole.

I would also let her know that Best Buy, Costco and such do have iPad 9s for $249 right now. It’s the model that’s going out, but will still be able to run the latest apps for several years.

As was said to me in a vaguely similar situation - in a week, you won't notice the $100, but she will. There's definitely something to be said for knowing you helped somebody out.

                    I was only joking

Yes, I agree with reversing the transaction and give the buyer a chance to do over.

It’s Christmas. Use the $110, kick in $140 and buy her kid a new iPad. Take the old one back and sell it again. Winning.

LOL, I was thinking about doing EXACTLY that when I was making coffee.

                            And then....

It’s interesting how the normal random person one meets can’t write a complete coherent sentence.

Usually I think about it like this: "Can I speak/write in her language as well as she speaks/writes in my language?"

That's a common apples to oranges comparison. The person asking themselves that is not typically living in a country with a dominant language other than their native one.

@George-K So she's happy with it now? I didn't under the "no fire" comment in the first post... like it works without catching fire? It compares to the Amazon Kindle Fire for Kids? It connects with a Firewire?

If she's happy with it, does that mean she already gave it to her kid?

Either way, I also thought it might be generous (if you trust her sincerity) to pick up the tab to help buy a "new" one for $250 from best buy, it's nice you (and Mik!) thought of that too.

Admittedly, I also judged about the 4 year old having an iPad concept, but you never know what someone is going through. Sure maybe it's just lazy, but she also could have other challenges (job, siblings with needs, etc) in which an electronic babysitter of an iPad is very helpful.
