Congress on track for shutdown as GOP divisions on full display after late night votes
-
For the 5 or so representatives, this is their peak I think. While possible, it is doubtful that the next election will result in the same Reb vs. Dem breakdown. If the Reb have a higher majority, it is possible that 6 votes will not be needed. If the Dem have the majority, then obviously, they will not be needed.
And I think that the Reb leadership has a long memory.

Just for good measure, House Republicans reject their own funding bill one more time just before government shutdown.

the House on Saturday took an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote to avert a shutdown at midnight on Sunday — with the majority of Democrats bailing out the GOP.
…
McCarthy shocked his party — and most on the Hill — by deciding to put a "clean" bill on the floor that could be enough to doom his speakership. The short-term funding patch that passed includes none of the GOP’s spending cuts or border policies. The only addition: $16 billion for [flood] disaster aid sought by the White House. -

This true?
I hope so. I’d rather bureaucrats sit on their hands for a while than Russia rebuild its empire.

The House passed spending bill has no money for Ukraine.

The GOP's support for Russia, in this case to snuff out a democracy, is inexplicable.

The vote count:
https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-congress-tees-up-votes-last-minute-scramble-avert-shutdown-2023-09-30/Overall: 391 for, 91 against
Among those voted to pass the 45-day funding bill, 209 are Democrats, 126 are Republicans. -
The Senate passed the bill, and Biden signed it:

Looks like there will be no government shutdown.
Let's see if the House GOP will try to remove McCarthy from Speakership comes Monday. Anyone wants to start a pool on this?

The Republic is indeed safer with an operating federal government than without. Let's see how Congress do with a separate Ukraine funding bill that's supposed to make up for its omission from the Sep.30 government funding bill. If that goes well and quickly, I will sleep even better knowing that the world is safer too.

Looks like the House GOP will indeed file a motion to vacate McCarthy:

The Nov. 17 shutdown has been averted. The can has been kicked down to Jan. 19.
No aid funding for Ukraine or Israel in the meantime.
The continuing drama:
But the short-term funding plan sparked backlash from House conservatives who were upset that it did not include deep spending cuts that they have demanded. As a result, the bill required Democratic support to pass the House.
.
In the end, more House Democrats supported the measure than Republicans – a warning sign for [House Speaker] Johnson. -
Easy to campaign. Difficult to govern. I think that Rep. Johnson is finding this out.
