The maximum ratio is to have the burger be 75% as tall as it is wide. Any more than that and you're gambling.

It should fit in your mouth without breaking your jaw.
And, of course, a truly great burger is greater than the sum of its parts.

You're talking about the whole burger - bun, toppings, etc, right?

Agreed, the photo above is a 1:1 ratio... a square. Unacceptable. And yes, some burgers come in even taller.
I agree with @Aqua-Letifer that the max height should be 75% of the width. Personally, I like a good 62.5% height, and will go as low as a 50% height, except on road trips where I'll scarf down McDonalds cheeseburgers which are like a 25% ratio. Crazy, except on road trips.

Just make it bite sized, like dim sum.
