And they say Americans will use anything but the metric system.

I haven’t gained the weight back that I lost during my year long gym absence due to Covid. I also took off about 3-4 months when I tore my rotator cuff last June. But I’m back at the gym, 1hr15 or so 7 days a week. I’m putting muscle mass back on, and I’ve started a treadmill cardio routine for the first time since well before transplant.

Try the ellipticals. Outstanding workout for the time invested and low impact. I do about an hour 3 or four times a week, half weights, half cardio. If I don't go, I do half hour cardio at home.

The Brits use all the systems. Metric, imperial, Ancient Roman...we mix and match as necessary.

@jon-nyc that's pretty much spot on.

When I was a kid, older people would habitually swap between the old money (pre-decimalisation) and the new money, so you'd hear people referring to two-bob or ten-bob, meaning 2 shillings (10 new pence), 10 shillings (50 new pence) despite shillings not being legal tender, and occasionally talk of 'half a crown' - which was 2 shillings and sixpence (12 1/2 new pence). Posh people would talk about Guineas - 1 pound and 1 shilling, or 105 new pence.

The really odd thing was that nobody thought it was weird.

              I was only joking

I failed miserably last year. I’ve been doing next to no added sugar since the beginning of the year, and not eating anything after dinner. And not drinking my calories. Sugar is probably my biggest issue. (It’s not 100% no added sugar, as some of the condiments/sauces and things I cook with have some sugar in them). I’ve got a long way to go, but so far it’s working (and it’s a lot easier now than it was 3 weeks ago).

I am the most out of shape I’ve been in probably 10 or 15 years. Last year I did a really poor job and finding and forcing time to work out. Combine that with really poor sleep (kids…) and snacking at night. Let’s see if I can make 2023 a better year!

Rowing machine for the win!! The only time I allow myself to watch certain shows is when I use it, so it is kind of a reward for exercising.

I do that too. If I ever find a serialized streaming thing that I'm interested in, which is rare, i try to keep it for my 'treadmill show'.

So how is everyone's weight and health doing?

It's the new year... time to pretend to (or maybe actually) get in shape this time. I downloaded a calisthenics app that provides daily 20-minute workout guides, which suits how my brain works. I'll try and do that most days, combined with slightly better eating, slightly better sleeping, and much less late night snacking (easily the main culprit of my weight). Will see how 2025 turns out... sadly reading above I had the same idea about two years ago.

For excuses? Sure...I have them. Mainly three young kids who have each passed the baton each each were ages 0-2 in terms of getting up often at night. My watch says I average 5 hours of sleep, which isn't bad except I'm "in bed" for 8 hours each night... meaning in aggregate I average 2-3 hours being up with the kids each night... for the past SIX years. Woof. I feel it. Yes this is turning into a diary post. In fact the other day my watch said I got 8 hours of sleep for the first time since I think 2018?

Anyway... the youngest is turning two soon, and is starting to sleep through the night so there is light ahead. I've done this before if you recall... back in 2006 or so, I shed about 50 pounds over two years via running and eating subway club sandwiches LOL.

I'm currently 225 lbs, and at 6-feet tall I want to be around 175 lbs, but don't want to lose it too fast. Will see how it goes this time around! And as I start to enter my mid-40s, aside from shedding unnecessary weight, I want to start really focusing on flexibility and my core/back. I think my future self will appreciate it.

(Oh and my kids this week have suddenly discovered "dad used to be skinny like a stick!" so they remind me each day I used to be skinny.... it's funny, and honestly, they are great motivation to get healthier.)

Weight is stable +/- 5 lb over the last 3 years. Really no change.

Health is stable, with a few bumps.

The saying, "Lite is just one damn thing after another," is a gross understatement. The damn things overlap.

I had Covid then entered heavy travel season then moved house with all that entails. Lost momentum on my gym and protein regimen. Been picking it back up just since my guests left last Thursday.

I need to put on a good 10lbs of muscle mass. I can do it. Diet’s fine, probably need to cut out alcohol all together at least for some time. I’m going to do dry January to start and see where it goes from there.

                              @George-K good for you!

@jon-nyc I'll join you on the dry January. Or at least, I'll have a rule to never drink alone (despite it being an absolute relaxing joy at the end of long kiddo day, watching TV when everyone is asleep and the house is quiet). I've cut back on beer a bit already... it's basically liquid bread and for some reason doesn't taste as good as it did in my 20s and 30s.

I've not done that great since 2022. I have many excuses, such as work being abnormally stressful, and the roads around here being too hilly for easy cycling, and having to drive much further into work, and me being a lazy bastard but none of them really hold water if I'm honest. I've almost given up beer, and cut back to a bottle of wine per week (holidays excepted), and that's made a difference. I ought to give it up really, but hell no.

                                I was only joking
