@Jolly Scalise seems most likely to me.

You're right. Sorry for the misspelling. I'm not through the first mug yet...

@Jolly I figured it was a typo or autocorrect

Only anesthesiologists and surgeons might get this:

This seems comically absurd. How could he possibly accept this? Imagine the constant opportunity for any single representative to grandstand and blow up the house?

Mr. McCarthy privately agreed to more demands from the right-wing rebels that he had previously refused to countenance, including allowing a single lawmaker to force a snap vote at any time to oust him from the speakership, according to three people familiar with the negotiations who described them on the condition of anonymity, noting that they were ongoing and that no final deal had been reached.

I was going to post about the caving concessions. But, you're right. It's just stupid.

                  WSJ Editorial Board:

The problem any GOP leader faces today is that too many Republicans don’t really want to hold and keep political power. They’re much more comfortable in opposition in the minority, which is easier because no hard decisions or compromises are necessary. You can rage against “the swamp” without having to do anything to change it. This is the fundamental and sorry truth behind the Speaker spectacle and the performative GOP politics of recent years.

To be fair, some of the demands are not stupid, like a return to more single issue bills, a drastic reduction in earmarks and curtailing some campaign funding in "safe" GOP districts, so as to spend more in competitive and marginal districts.

                              From Jay Nordlinger:

Look, he could join the Russian army to help subdue Ukraine -- it would still not win the affection of MAGA. Can't politicians ever say, "It's not worth it"?

Ok so I am a noob. But, essentially is it that the "Gaetz" side of the GOP is holding hostage the speaker position because McCarthy isn't as extreme as they are? If so, wouldn't it make sense for a few democrats to join the normal GOP and get McCarthy in so a more extreme speaker isn't elected?

@89th They’d need something in return which would make a lot of Republicans hesitate to go along lest they get primaried.
