Putin says war in Ukraine not Russia’s fault:

Sure glad he cleared up that question.

During a televised address with senior military officials, the Russian president said he continued to see Ukraine as a "brotherly nation".

"For years, we tried to build good-neighbourly relations with Ukraine, offering loans and cheap energy, but it did not work."

Unreal. He blithely ignores Crimea, Georgia and 8 years of a border war on Donetsk and Luhansk.

@Renauda the woman (Can I say that?) is Sen. Collins from Maine.

"In this handout photo provided by the Ukrainian Presidential Press Office, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (center) poses for a photo with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (second left), Senator Susan Collins (second right), Senator John Barrasso (left) and Senator John Cornyn (right) in Kyiv, Ukraine, on Saturday, May 14, 2022."

It's an older photo, and I just posted it for the look on Zelensky's face.

His speech was fine though. Reaching out to the American people was smart. I do hope the reluctant incoming GOP congress critters get a clue as to how important this really is.

Interesting piece on Putin and the real situation. Wordier than it needs to be, but worth it, I think.

You’re right about wordiness and there’s also a lot of unnecessary anti-Trump squelch that detracts from the good points being presented.

Interesting to read the Kremlin’s reaction to Zelenskyi’s visit and speech. Once again it is denying any responsibility for its ongoing aggression and placing the blame entirely in the US and NATO. I also it is playing up the delivery of the Patriot system. Makes sense as 99.9% of Russians have no clue that it is a purely defensive weapon against incoming missiles.

                          @xenon

The most common word in the Kremlin-speak this past year or so has become провокация (provokatsiya). It needs no translation. A was common Soviet term used throughout the Cold War against the West as well. It is supposed to help to reinforce the blameless innocence of the Russian state in its peace loving aggressive foreign policy and militarism.

Not sure about any these outcomes in 2023:

                                https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-63987113

Still, I would wager any one of them is more plausible than a single one of Medvedev’s predictions George posted in the other thread.

                                      Why am I not surprised?

"We fight with our brains. They fight with numbers. Because their resources --we're not revealing some secret here -- are much greater than ours," he said.

In some locations, including in Bakhmut, photographs and videos posted by military bloggers and even the soldiers themselves point to outdated battlefield tactics that are reminiscent of World War-I trench warfare, in which waves of infantrymen advance across open fields and try to storm enemy trenches, only to be mowed down by gunfire.

"They just push and shove their way through. And a lot of them die. Because they have no tactics, nothing of the sort," another soldier said. "They just go like meat. There were some cases when the infantry said that they went in without any [armed vehicles], or without machine guns."
