How far will your EV really go?

It's not that bad if you don't mind half hour refueling stops about every three hours.
With my prostate, that's what we do anyway. But my visit to the coffee-recycling center is usually (a bit) quicker.

A coworker just bought the Audi Q4 e-tron. We were talking this morning about how if they need to go on any road trips they'll either take their other (gas) car, or will have to carefully plan out recharging stations.
A former colleague has a Tesla Model S. He's probably had it for 4 years now, perhaps longer.
He's done some trips from the Chicago burbs to the West coast.
Lots and lots of planning involved, and then there's the inevitable "We ate lunch at the roadside diner while the Tesla charged up." Or, "We stated at a motel that was close to a charging station."
No thanks.

No thanks.Yeah that's what I've heard as well. Even with kids, identifying the rest stops so that the car can charge while they eat lunch or stretch.
It's too bad the EV battery can't be completely recharged by the driving of the vehicle itself.

That would make it a “perpetual motion machine.”

Years ago, didn't someone post a concept of a induction roadway which would charge the vehicle as you drove over it?

Don’t remember. But it won’t be a “perpetual motion machine” of it draws energy from an external source.

@Axtremus, obviously not a perpetual motion device.

That reminds me, I have seen this concept proposed in a middle schooler’s science fair project.

LOL I actually did a report similar to this in 7th grade. Not the exact same, but it had to be an invention and mine was a road where all cars were connected wirelessly to each other so that there would be no accidents and travel would be at maximum efficiency/speed.

Rent an Electric Vehicle Next Time
It is a great way to learn how to use an EV at a very low cost.

Regarding “When You Rent a Car, You Are Not Looking for an EV” (Letters, Oct. 3): Renting an electric vehicle is a great way to learn how to use one at a very low cost. Also, when renting an EV from Hertz, you need to return it with only 10% of charge. Electric vehicles really haven’t lengthened long driving trips for me because the charging happens in the background, while I use the restroom, refill refreshments or get something to eat. If my rental entails more local driving, the key to charging is having a hotel at which you can charge overnight or during the day while the car is parked.

That is really interesting. I wonder how practicable it is to establish and maintain? How affordable?

Battery charge is not the only thing that limits duration.
New Electric Cars Are Less Reliable Than Petrol or Diesel Models, Survey Suggests. A consumer poll indicated that 31% of electric car owners reported a problem with their vehicle in its first four years.
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-03-03/are-electric-cars-more-reliable-than-petrol-or-diesel-maybe-not-poll-saysAccording to AAA's “Cold Weather Can Cut Electric Car Range by Over 40%”, EVs often lose 12% of their range in cold weather, but the loss leaps to 41% with the heater on full blast.
https://blinkcharging.com/is-a-cold-climate-a-deterrent-to-ev-ownership/?locale=enThat's just a couple examples.
This is new technology. It may or may not ever be able to replace internal combustion. I don't think anyone knows yet.
