It would be awkward to be a Ukrainian athlete at the Olympics and come back to no country

I always have my doubts when sociologists attempt analysis and editorialize on political issues. The following link is no different, the author is a leftist sociologist who, in fact comes across to me at least, as a watered down Putin stooge. His big issue is with NATO and its expansion eastward into Ukraine. Still, he points out some interesting facts regarding his home country and how it has handled (or abnegated its responsibility to handle) its affairs with the Russian bear:

Invading Ukraine during the Olympics would be a slap in the face to Xi. I doubt that Putin would risk embarrassing the Chinese right now.

              👆 This

I was reading a report about how president Putin had taken steps to make Russia more "sanction" proof since the invasion of Crimea. They had "stockpiled" stuff and reduced their need for US and other western currency. But, removing them from doing USD transactions would be super super hard for them to overcome.

Looks like brinksmanship, but it's hard to say. The opportunity for misperception here is huge.

And possibly 6 months away from a total economic collapse.

Seems to be a marked increase in artillery and mortar exchanges since the closing ceremonies of the Olympics. Provocations? Possibly.
