The new, but not improved, Washington Football Team
-
@copper That's what I keep telling my buddies. I say, "you do realize why they have red/burgundy in their colors, right?" Oh but no one can say the word redskins, now. (I still do)
Yeah a chopper flew over the stadium and used a massively zoomed in camera to see that there was "Commanders" gear in an office.
BTW, the nickname is: Washington Commies (no joke), you would think someone in the front office would've realized that on day 1 of the new name selection process.
-
Did they focus test any of this? The name rollout has been a laughingstock with leaks everywhere, NOBODY likes the name, I think it’s time they cleared house in the ownership group.
-
- They should have kept the original name.
- Barring that, they should have changed the name to Warriors and they wouldn't have even had to tamper with the logo.
-
It’s official. Worst surprise in all of history.
-
Go Commies!
-
Call me contrarian but Commanders seems like a decent name for a football team. Also “commies” doesn’t seem a natural short because of the difference in pronunciation of the O sound.
-
The new web site: https://www.commanders.com/
Most of it still uses the old name.
-
Overall I think the name is a good one. Just doesn't have a good nickname (3 syllables is too much for any sports chant) other than Commies, and is ironic given the tweet point above. @Jolly yes Warriors would've been better and would've continued the tribute to the Native American fighting strength that Redskins name honored.
-
It’s a great name!
For an Arena League Team.
-
Good point 89. There aren’t a lot of 3 syllable team names and most that do have a natural nickname. Pats, Bucs, Cards, etc
-
Wait, did they honestly send three African American men out for the reveal? Pander much?

Is there an alternative?

So far I think it is fair to say that the fans hate the new name.
Actually not all hate it, some just dislike it.
And some others just make fun of it.
#HTTR
That hashtag confused the hell out of me for a while. I thought it was a weird short form of Hater…
-
I have seen that hash in a lot of places today, facebook type places where Washington football fans are unhappy.
I am a Patriots guy, not a HTTR guy, but the skins were my neighbors for a long time and they are my #2 team. I coached t-ball on their practice field and I have seen Joe Jacoby and Dexter Manley hang out at the golf course many times - 40 years ago. I once ran into Joe Theismann at Hechinger (Lowes before Lowes), I helped him find something, a light bulb or something.
Anyway, I'll give them a HTTR for solidarity, for at least one day.
For you out-of-towners, Hail To The Redskins - that was the fight song.
