To what degree has the government ever intruded in your life?

Off the top of my head, here are a few things that should work very well at convincing the government that your marriage is real:
- Shared property, preferably your primary residence, with here name on the deed along with yours
- Shared bank/investment accounts
- Her designated as the primary beneficiary of your life insurance policies, bank and retirement accounts in the event of your untimely demise
- Have children together
Best of luck, @Horace and spouse.
DON'T DO ANYTHING HE SAID!!!!
IF.... and I know it's a big IF... but if somewhere down the road, your wife should "step out" on you and leads to the demise of your marriage, the fact that you did any of those suggestions, she... because of those actions, could wind up with 50% of your assets.
Ask me how I know....

Heh. Well, the financial risk of the marriage is a done deal no matter what anyway.

@horace Not necessarily. I don’t know how CA works but in NY premarital assets are off the table in a divorce iff they stay titled in your name.
Well, I've had an accretive four years... but yes there's a minority of assets not subject to community property laws.

Most romantic thread evah!

Look at the average age of posters here, Phibes.
I'm still trying to work out whether Jon writing 'iff' was a typo or a too-clever-for-his-own good use of mathematical terminology, which shows you what a romantic devil I am!

I take it that having two toothbrushes in a cup in the bathroom is insufficient proof in California?
(As an aside, I wonder if the plural of toothbrush shouldn’t be teethbry?)

It's teethsful. You need to look at the head's dependents of the noun.
In British English, it's still just "tooth" for dental rather than grammatical reasons.

Obviously the latter. You have to fight autocorrect to type it (it thinks you mean 'off').
I knew Horace would catch it.

I wish we could use it more often ∀ our discussions. It would save a lot of time.

The only time the government intruded in my life is in the distant past, when I held slightly extreme libertarian views to the point of ignoring the filing of income taxes for several years. I used to be a very selfish person. I hate that about myself.
I no longer hold those views. The fact that I had to cough up more than enough money to buy a house, and decimate any chance of early retirement, had no impact on my views changing. It only strengthened my hatred of the government at the time.
I still do not like the government, but for many other reasons that I will not discuss here, or anywhere.

My nephew is following in your footsteps. Hasn't filed for several years. The dumb thing is he would probably get it all back.
If you don’t owe any taxes, it’s not too big a deal not to file, from what I understand.
