Did you even read the document @LuFins-Dad linked to? The first for numbered bullet points are entirely reasonable. I am particularly emphatic to the first point about giving the IRS resources to go after "sophisticated tax evasion." This is not about individual tax payers or mom-and-pop shops, but about large enterprises with million dollar finance departments with million dollar tax consultants exploiting loopholes.

I don't spend my life on tax avoidance schemes, but I use every deduction I am entitled to. And those deductions do shape what I do with my money...As it does for a vast number of Americans.
Which is a shame, actually. We ought to be able to do our taxes on a postcard.

This. Or even not at all, let it be automatic and transparent.
A simplified tax code results in more “revenue” for the government as well as vastly reduced costs with a smaller IRS footprint.
