    A supercharged IRS. Swell.

It more than doubles the size of the IRS in ten years.

That alone is enough that I want no part of it...

The IRS should absolutely step up enforcement of existing tax laws. Letting to many tax cheats get away with not paying the taxes they lawfully owe was a major reason Greece got into trouble.

So we should give them even more intrusive access and powers so they can make us pay for programs we should not have to begin with.

Wait up. Maybe we have nothing to worry about. Given how things are going now, there will probably be so many people on the dole and bringing in no income that even at its present size the IRS will have hardly anything to do.

Did you even read the document @LuFins-Dad linked to? The first for numbered bullet points are entirely reasonable. I am particularly emphatic to the first point about giving the IRS resources to go after "sophisticated tax evasion." This is not about individual tax payers or mom-and-pop shops, but about large enterprises with million dollar finance departments with million dollar tax consultants exploiting loopholes.

The tax plan aside enforcing existing laws is an idea worthy of discussion, it is certainly a cudgel in the gun debate.

Also I don’t spend my life on tax avoidance schemes. I would rather those who owe pay than my taxes be raised.

I don't spend my life on tax avoidance schemes, but I use every deduction I am entitled to. And those deductions do shape what I do with my money...As it does for a vast number of Americans.

Which is a shame, actually. We ought to be able to do our taxes on a postcard.

This. Or even not at all, let it be automatic and transparent.

A simplified tax code results in more “revenue” for the government as well as vastly reduced costs with a smaller IRS footprint.

TPTB have to keep taxes obtuse and confusing. If most people really knew what they were paying, they'd burn half of Washington down to the ground.
