It does wear off over time and they will tarnish. There's also been a bit of a fad for unlacquered ones of late. While we're on the subject... Hie thee to your nearest oil well and the collection tank. Steal 10-15 gallons of crude oil. Mix the crude oil with diesel fuel, to where it's thin enough to apply with a deck sprayer. Makes a decent exterior penetrating stain for a board-n-batten barn or house.
