@Aqua-Letifer said in I love to Jeopardy: By the way... I say thee whatever to Trebek's gaffe. He wasn't making fun of either of them, he just hadn't met too many male nurses or female carpenters I guess. I say the same about people who grew up insulated, see black folks on the metro for the first time, and get uncomfortable. They aren't racist, that's just what you do when people act in ways you don't expect due to your lack of experience—the exact same thing happens when people unaccustomed to dealing with Tourette sufferers are forced to deal with them at Starbucks or whatever. They get quiet and cautious, and try not to draw attention to themselves. It's not hate or judgment, just caution and unease borne out of ignorance, and a biological response that's literally older than the hills. And it goes away once they've more experience with people different from themselves, so, BFD. My success rate for convincing people this isn't a horrible analysis is about 13% but I stand by it. Yep. People go by the judgments formed by their experiences. Period. It has been ever thus. It seldom has anything to do with the other person outside of familiarity.

@ILM said in Best and Worst Masks: George - Have you ordered any of them or plan to place an order? We use the disposable surgical masks (which I hate because the ear loops irritate my ears - I never wore that kind at work). I'm still looking for the "duckbill" style masks with ties that go over the crown of your head and around the neck. For me, that was always the most comfortable type. The elastic pissed me off.

@mark said in It's getting close.: A friend just sent me text telling me that a co-worker's wife tested positive Monday. She works at our local pet shop, where we were about to go, to get some dog food. Other employees there have also tested positive. I ordered the dog food, online. My friend works at a machine shop where nobody wears a mask or practices any social distancing at all. Mark, if it's that close, it's going to be pretty much everywhere in your area. That's the community spread in action. Take care and keep ordering stuff for delivery or curbside pickup.

Nah. I have a handheld and an Oster that does fine. Don't need another Instant Pot. We are on a kitchen appliance moratorium. No room at the inn.

It's kind of ironic when you considered how the Canadian government started. "A fourth basic difference between the American and Canadian systems is in the type of federalism they embody. The American system was originally highly decentralized. The federal Congress was given a short list of specific powers; everything not mentioned in that list belonged to the states “or to the people” (that is, was not within the power of either Congress or any state legislature). “States’ rights” were fundamental. The Fathers of Confederation, gazing with horror at the American Civil War, decided that “states’ rights” were precisely what had caused it, and acted accordingly." Here,” said Sir John A. Macdonald, “we have adopted a different system. We have expressly declared that all subjects of general interest not distinctly and exclusively conferred upon the local governments and legislatures shall be conferred upon the general government and legislature. We have thus avoided that great source of weakness that has been the disruption of the United States. We hereby strengthen the central Parliament, and make the Confederation one people and one government, instead of five peoples and five governments, with merely a point of authority connecting us to a limited and insufficient extent.” https://lop.parl.ca/about/parliament/senatoreugeneforsey/book/chapter_4-e.html

@Mik said in Should Police enforce mask compliance?: @jon-nyc said in Should Police enforce mask compliance?: @Mik said in Should Police enforce mask compliance?: No, but they could give you a lecture on your responsibilities as a citizen. Perfect pplication for a social worker. If you think social workers believe their ‘clients’ have responsibilities you probably haven’t met one in 30 years. That is true, I haven't and I don't hang with them. jon's right, they're not big on that. In fairness to them, though, their job is to help them with their rights, whatever that happens to be. (Yeah yeah I know, social workers can really do some damage sometimes because of the leverage they have.)

Definitely a Caucasian nose though. There will be retribution for that. I mean, more retribution than a lightning bolt.
