The pressure to take a boat or ship out can be extreme. For commercial fishermen, you don't fish, you don't make any money. For others, it may be a schedule problem.

My FIL's neighbor is the captain of a container ship. It has an A crew and a B crew, plying a regular route between Houston and Amsterdam. The ship runs a tight schedule. A couple of years back, he was under intense pressure to take his ship through a storm, in order to keep that schedule. As captain, he refused, changing his route and losing a day and a half. He had to come before a committee at work to explain his actions, because of the money lost.

Our Malamute chases birds like that. He has killed chickens before, back in China. For some reason birds are the only animals that activate him like that. He ignores every other critter.

@Horace said in Pretty soon you're talking about real money:

I struggle to love much of the classical repertoire as it is. I suspect I would be batting zero in an attempt to love the left handed stuff.

    George Orwell smiled.

All protests are created equal. Some protests are more equal than others.

The irony is completely lost on the self righteousness of many.

Also, why are people still fighting this fight? We already implemented the Swedish model, pretty much.

We were locked down for, what, 8 weeks? Less in some parts.

Of the set of all humans who have told me they're doing shit like that in a "totally safe" way, the subset of those humans who have actually kept their word continues to be null.

TG, honestly, I like you and I know that sometimes it probably seems like I don't. But i do. So i want you to know that i honestly do not like having to challenge your logic in almost every post you write. But geez, girl..... when your desire to make both sides equal is so firmly entrenched in your world view that you can't see something as obvious as the fact that the Left hates America, It's time you face up to the fact that your viewpoint is flawed. They flat out TELL YOU they hate the country.

The state unemployment systems back end runs on COBOL, but the bottleneck is the GUI front end systems and phone systems so people can get access to apply. Those are not COBOL.

The actual programming to change payment amounts and conditions is pretty simple.

IBM responded to the states whining about the lack of COBOL programmers by starting a place tro register and make yourself available. Myself and a lot of people I know registered and not one was contacted.

The COBOL jobs you see on DICE are still the same old low dollar stuff, mostly serving as the liason between American companies and Indian programmers.
