I started Stranger Things when it first came out. I think I'd watched about 3 episodes before I gave up. Just didn't grab me.

I really liked it from the beginning, but probably because it's right in my era. IIRC it was set in 1983, right when I was in college. Love seeing all the nostalgic references.

Maybe the real problem is access to money to buy these things. 50 years ago people had to count their pennies to live.

The question that needs to be asked is how an unemployed or barely employed teenager got the cash to buy these toys in the first place.

I was going to say this too. I couldn't afford my first gun until I was about 30. I blame the minimum wage.

These days, I am more convinced than ever that I want to keep the guns I have. Surprised how many people think we should rely on police and politicians to protect us and have our best interests at heart.

Three episodes in…I can see why many people aren’t going to like it, but frankly, it’s the best it’s been since Season 1, IMO.

I am enjoying it. Why don't you think many won't like it?

My only problem is a young El suddenly having much broader vocabulary.

I always get "bright medium (grind) fir". Which is, I guess, Douglas Fir. Readily available in Oregon. I like the red-orange-ness of it against our green grass.

I also have used some river rock in spots. Easy to keep the weeds picked. Leaves do have a way of snuggling down between rocks but what doesn't get blown out with my leaf blower I burn out with my weed torch. 🙂

I agree - the Oregon Ducks, just really a middling team, almost fell backwards into the 4-team playoff.

For some reason the easiest sort of exercise for me to stick to is walking up hills. (I could stick with walking on flat surfaces too, but that is truly a waste of time.)

Interesting that you say this - I just finished the book "How Upright Walking Made Us Human" and it noted in there that we are such efficient walkers that we do not burn much in calories doing it, but somehow there are multiple other benefits that are not so well understood.

  • 99.2% of recent Covid deaths are unvaccinated people
    KincaidK Kincaid

Found out recently a 61-year-old acquaintance died from COVID mid-May. Not so old, unknown if she had any of the "factors" that make your odds worse, but I do know she was not vaccinated.

I am worried about my 83-year-old Dad, who remains unvaccinated and thinks he is too healthy to not withstand it.

I agree that birds are the closest relatives (or maybe even) dinosaurs.

Proven by DNA testing. I am reading a book right now regarding evolution and bipedalism and it notes that crocodiles and birds diverged kind of together from dinosaurs and then diverged from each other.

I finally got my motorcycle endorsement about 2010 maybe, and then at the end of 2012 things were looking good and I was planning on buying a bike in the spring. Then I was laid off and out of work for 14 months. By the time my twins were done with college I decided that at 57 years old I should probably forget my motorcycle dreams.

So I bought the '75 Ford F100 instead.

So much of WW2 that I’ve read are based on personal diaries but they seem to be the UK view, I always wanted to hear from the diaries of the other perspective.

I read a book about D-day and the subsequent summer campaign told through the eyes of German soldiers. What I remember most is complaints and astonishment at the extent to which the the allies controlled the air. Lots of sentences like “and the enemy flies where he wants, when he wants, and places bombs at will, without even token opposition”

I just finished A Higher Call by Adam Makos about the German pilot that held off shooting down a severely damaged and helpless B-17 and instead escorted them out to sea so that the coastal flak gunners wouldn't shoot it down. Awesome insight into one person's experience.
