The employment shortage reality
-
I know this has been mentioned here before but it’s not nearly getting the news traction it should. This week I’ve personally visited 4 stores that were either closed or limited due to employee shortages (likely because of unemployment benefits).
Caribou Coffee and Panera both have limited hours - they open late (after morning rush) and close early.
Dollar Tree was closed completely yesterday (no workers), just a hand written sign on their door.
The Wendy’s I just stopped at now literally had TWO employees running the entire place. The drive through only took orders at the window, and the lady taking the order also fulfilled the order. She also had a tip jar saying “tips please, there are only 2 of us here”.
The employment shortage is a very real thing.

I saw it in NC. Including a restaurant on the beach that had to close early on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, and two places in Wilmington with absurd waits to order and get stuff brought to your table.
And two weeks ago in California another restaurant that wouldn’t seat us even though half the tables were empty.

President Biden has a plan. “Pay them moooore, man!”

If you can't enact a national minimum wage, you can always manipulate wages upwards...

People cry out that he doesn't understand that the higher wages will just lead to inflation, and socioeconomic positioning will stay relatively the same except for retired individuals living on savings (they'll be screwed...). I think they are wrong. He understands perfectly. But, inflation takes some of the sting out of his spending bills and reduces our debt percentages. And if wage increases result in fewer jobs and more automation, then they win again as they explore UBI.
