I think when we discussed this a year ago many of us saw this coming very clearly. On the surface, I think it's a good reason for a holiday. It's also a good reminder that slavery ended 150+ years ago!

Do we really need another federal holiday?

I like holidays that are always on a Friday or Monday. Can we just do that? Is it implied in the term Juneteenth?

              Eh, I'm fine with it.

Non sequitur: I was in South Carolina a couple of days ago, taking 95 most of the way. On that drive, you first pass a BIGASS American flag that I believe is attached to a used car dealership. (What is it about used car dealerships and ginormous American flags?) Just past that, on the right if you're going south, is a BIGASS Confederate flag at a civil war memorial, clearly visible from the road.

My question is how have the woke herd not gotten on the ball there? I was shocked. I mean sure, it's in the south, but plenty of folks from New York and states north drive that road every day. You're telling me no one has taken a picture and memed the memorial on Twitter yet?

              Please love yourself.

Maybe it's not as big a deal as some would make it out?

Republicans must be hated every day, not just on cherished holidays like junetenth.

I think it's fine to have a day to mark the end of slavery (even if it's not the right date in a technical sense).

More federal holidays = good, imo.

The bill is sponsored by Sen. Edward Markey, D-Mass., and had 60 co-sponsors. He tweeted Monday: “We have a long road towards racial justice in the United States and we cannot get there without acknowledging our nation’s original sin of slavery. It is long past time to make Juneteenth a federal holiday.”

Do they really need to pay for a day off?

Maybe overtime for some hourly workers.

For white collar jobs, you have the work you need to do and your regular allotted amount of time.

With a day off, I find work just compresses a bit - but I think people would take the occasional 4-day week workload to get a 3 day weekend.

You could have had the day Lincoln gave the Emancipation Proclamation but that didn't free any slaves north of the Mason-Dixon.

@catseye3 I thought about this some more.

It's a fine idea to commemorate the end to slavery. It is a mark of respect at the very least. Maybe some ceremonies nationwide, faith based activities, what have you. But I don't think it rises to the level of a federal holiday.
