The Great Resignation

I think it’s a bit early to say there is a fundamental change although it is possible.
In my lifetime corporations have moved from stakeholder capitalism to shareholder capitalism so it’s no no surprise employees are not so loyal to their companies and now are saying maybe somewhere else is better.
They will work again. Separating one’s work identity from personal identity is a fool’s game. And most people soon enough tire of their free time. They have no clue how to spend it. Also people want stuff, no one has suggested that the consumer economy is dead, in fact it’s overheated. As soon as the money dries up and people have an identity crisis we will see how the chips ultimately land. Pundits are way out over their skis.

I'll never work in another office on someone else's terms again. Sure, check in here and there, some meetings save time. But most don't. For me there's absolutely no reason to be there daily. I quit my last job in part because they were pulling this kind of shit this past January. Yeah, January.

Well maybe it’s a trend, just as companies stopped having the ability to get people to move. I get how much it saves companies with not having to pay for office space and all those costs and now lowering wages but I still believe the ultimate cost will be loss of loyalty, passion and that extra 20% you get from loyal motivated employees.

Not all jobs can be done via telework. If you need to physically test jet engines, it is highly unlikely that you can that from home. So I can understand that some jobs at a company like Lockheed cannot be done via telework. Most software jobs though, there is very little reason to need to go into the office these days except for some collaborative design sessions where white boarding can help enormously. Despite advances in teleconferencing and "smart board" technologies, the good old whiteboard is still hard to beat.

They will work again. Separating one’s work identity from personal identity is a fool’s game. And most people soon enough tire of their free time. They have no clue how to spend it. Also people want stuff, no one has suggested that the consumer economy is dead, in fact it’s overheated. As soon as the money dries up and people have an identity crisis we will see how the chips ultimately land. Pundits are way out over their skis.

People who aren't sufficiently creative will tire of their free time. Hubby and I don't have that problem. We can always think of multiple new projects, and we love being creative. Even if hubby would start to have trouble thinking of his next project, I can always help inspire him. LOL
