Selling my car

Should I take the trouble to list it? Or just bring it to car max and be done with it?

In these times? I have never traded in a car, but I ight be tempted.
When we got rid of Mrs. George’s 328, the dealer offered $4K less than CarMax. He didn’t believe me, so I showed him the offer. He matched it.
They said they would buy my A6 as well, Lowballled me by $6K. I showed him the CarMax offer and they said they couldn’t match it.

Appointment tomorrow for carmax

How closely do they check on the car? I have a friend that is looking to sell, but she tells me that the car runs a bit "rough". Does carmax take a mechanic to look over before they buy?

It doesn't matter. They will examine the car and give you a price, in writing, that's good for 7 days. If you can get a better price elsewhere, go for it.
In my opinion, the offer, as I said - in writing, is worth a lot of money, especially when considering the hassle of private sales and/or trade-ins.
D3 had a Hyundai Elantra that she wanted to trade in. The usual suspects (Edmunds, KBB) gave hear a fair price that she could expect. She took it to CarMax and they offered her $1000 more than the other guys' estimates. Guess what she did.

I was shocked. They gave me 7600 for it. That’s almost half what it cost new (before taxes).
For and 8 year old car.
Economy cars really hold their value. At least the reliable ones.

I bought it in may of 2013

@klaus We’ll see. They should have it posted on their site in a day or two
