I went to Williamsburg once, and absolutely hated it. Ten minutes in Williamsburg and you never want to hear the word colonial again in your life. Mobcaps and muskets for freakin days.

Interesting comments. I've said I love Cannon Beach, and although it attracts a lot of tourists, it's not particularly "touristy" in the sense of lots of t-shirts and tchotchkes. For that, drive north about 10 miles to Seaside.

Cannon Beach has a hardware store/restaurant...

Galena is not touristy at all. Just small town-ish. I imagine Whitefish is like that as well.

The last time we were in Galena, it wasn't too touristy, but that was probably 25 to 30 years ago.

Marietta for Ohio? Querstionable. there are a lot of candidates.

Cannon Beach? Definitely, although again there are a lot of candidates.

But Ocean City? For starters, it's by no means a small town. And it is definitely a tourist trap. Most all of it looks like a very seedy beach town - low-rent Vegas style.

Traverse City is nice, but I'd pick Ann Arbor.

The rolling land of southwestern Wisconsin is quite beautiful. It is not dissimilar to southern Ohio, but it is somehow different in a way I could never quite put my finger on. The farmland and homes are exceptionally well kept and picturesque.

That's on Martha's Vineyard. Bit of a stupid choice, really, as it's not somewhere anybody normal can really hope to live. Also, if you get taken really sick there, you're in a mess of trouble.

One of these surveys identified Sharon, MA as one of the best towns in the country, which is the next town to ours, and is a much more normal kind of place. It's where I cycle.

Several of these aren't really small.

Williamsburg isn't even close to small. Virginia has a lot of nice small towns. Williamsburg is nice enough, but it is a giant tourist trap - it has a Busch Gardens amusement park.

Mr. Obama lives in Edgartown, it is small-ish with a lot of big people.

I lived in Ann Arbor, small town, big university.

Indeed. An apt description of Ocean City. The Delaware beach towns are light years better. St. Michaels is wonderful, and Berlin is very nice too.

Used to do a lot of business in St. Francisville. Ever since they built the new bridge at New Roads and they redid U.S. 61, it's a decent commute into Baton Rouge. The public school system is pretty good and they have a helluva golf course (The Bluffs).

You can drive through the back roads and run into a lot of 10 acre places with some really nice homes.

Besides, The Farm is just 35 miles down the road.

                                        I guess there's a down-side to every area.

                                        I was only joking
