Bill Belichick Set to Receive Award From Donald Trump
ill Belichick has received a ton of awards over the course of his career, but the one he is set to get this week might be the most controversial.
Belichick is reportedly going to be awarded the Medal of Freedom by U.S. President Donald Trump. Apparently, Trump is planning to spend his final days in office utilizing his remaining time in power by acknowledging friends.
Meredith McGraw of Politico described Trump’s upcoming actions as followed:
With just days to go in office and facing calls to resign, President Donald Trump is planning to spend the upcoming week taking a ceremonial victory lap and making last-minute use of his presidential powers. A trip to the border is in order, pardons appear to be in the works, and so, too, is an award ceremony for one of his favorite football coaches as well as a top political ally.
Belichick has long been a noted Trump supporter and someone the president has called a great friend.
According to the White house’s official website the award was “established by President John F. Kennedy in 1963, this prestigious award is the Nation’s highest civilian honor. It is awarded by the President of the United States to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the security or national interests of America, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.”
At one point, speaking publicly about this honor would have been a no-brainer for Belichick. However, based on the riots at the nation’s capital last week and Trump’s involvement in the events that have subsequently led to efforts to remove him from office immediately, things have become far more complicated.

@taiwan_girl I had the same gut reaction, so I looked up the list of recipients. There is a significant "this accomplished person is in my tribe" component to the award.

Yeah - I've never paid attention to these lists before and maybe Obama and Bush did the same thing - but when you have football coaches winning national freedom awards (I'm not sure he does something other than football), I'm not sure this means that much.
I'm guessing some frontline healthworkers do much more heroic work.

Back in 2011, the late Joe Paterno (former Penn. State university head football coach) was nominated to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, but a child sex abuse scandal broke out, Paterno were dismissed from his job and his nomination for the medal was withdrawn.

Perhaps the right thing to do is call in and say:
"My bones are achy, I feel feverish and have a raspy throat. Moreover I can't smell the locker room and all my food tastes like styrofoam packing peanuts. So with all due respect, I think it best that I stay home and take a knee on this one".

I can't think of many things more important to our culture.
Read the criteria - "contributions to ... other significant public or private cultural endeavors."
Also he is a friend of Mr. Trump who used to be in the football business.
He deserves it, no question.

I'm not often very serious, but the selection of Belichick for this award is fine with me.
Look at the list of recipients, it is full of entertainers and sports figures. Mr. Belichick has been a significant sports figure for decades.
I don't see any question.

Copper is usually benignly trolling unless the topic is aviation.
This question has occupied me for years.
I think it's more that Copper mixes it up, possibly for self amusement. He is often subtle. You just don't always know.
