I think there were plenty of us who didn't anticipate that the protests would turn violent. I think Trump was one of them.

On the first part, I agree. I don't think Thomas's wife meant support for the violence component. As for President Trump, I suspect his feelings probably are more related to the negative public opinion than the outright assault on the Capitol.

Well if we're going to deal harshly with those who encourage peaceful protests that turn violent, we're going to have a heck of a lot of guilty people who will never own their guilt. Trump is welcome to the club, shared by a lot of his haters.

Yet another aspect of what makes Trump come across as a loose cannon to people who find his enthusiastic boosterism repugnant.

Are justices to recuse themselves because they have friends or family that hold unpopular opinions? Show me what Justice Thomas has DONE that would justify recusal. Near as I can see, all his wife did was express an opinion.

The point of recusing oneself is to ensure that justice is seen to be done, and that there is no question of personal bias.
If you honestly don't believe this situation smells a bit fishy, then I don't know what to say. Maybe get some olfactory testing done?
