I know exactly what you wanted to get at, and since it's completely irrelevant to what TG was actually asking it's fair to point that out.

Like I've said already, I don't give a damn what your opinion is. I wasn't talking to you, and you do NOT know what I'm getting at, so it's not your place to decide what's relevant and what's not. So butt out.

Well, if you don't give a damn then stop replying to my posts. It's very simple.

I've got a better idea, what say you stop sticking your nose into stuff that's none of your business? I wasn't talking to you in the first place. I didn't ask you a question, I didn't ask for your opinion, and I didn't ask for you to speak for someone else. What is it - are you of the opinion that what you think matters so much that you can just jump into the middle of two other people and start telling them what to do?

FUCK OFF, you arrogant bastard! If I want any shit out of you I'll squeeze your head.

I find it rather boring that you always resort to the same expletives. One of the wonderful aspects of the English language is its wide selection of colorful swear words. If it is not too much to ask, I would be delighted if you could make an effort to go beyond the F-word and your other handful of profanities in future posts.

I think the definition of a religious person is someone who loves their fellow man as they love themselves.

I recall an ex-poster here who, while being strongly Christian, made a point of saying they were not religious. In their mind, the difference was what they found to be the core, which was what they considered to be their true Christianity, versus what they found to be man-made arbitrary details, which is what they considered to be religion.

              Education is extremely important.

When it comes to questions regarding religion, I am particularly dumb. I do learn a lot from discussions where some people have a rich background of study and practice. There are people on this forum that can discuss at a much higher level, so I do appreciate learning from others and in that sense, I appreciate Taiwan Girl's question.
I can recall some of those people that had an extensive background, very interesting!
But so often things would devolve into arguments, as usual, or so it seems.

I believe a "religious person" lives a life knowing they will likely be judged, and forgiven for the negatives, maybe some, hopefully all.
It's personal spirituality that lives outside of the physical church or specific practice. So, whether Christian, Jew, Muslim, etc., the Judgement Day will not be a hierarchy of "which religion is best," but how a life was lived. The good, bad, ugly, and the thoughts and secrets in the closet that nobody knows about, except the spiritual person, and their personal manifestation of what is God.

Damn. I'm kinda doomed. There was that one day where I was kind of nice. Should have marked it on my calendar.

@taiwan_girl said in What is the definition of a religious person?:

There have been a couple of recent forum posts and forum threads about religion and people who are saying they are religious.

What is the definition of a religious person?

Is it more actions, (the way you conduct yourself), or is it something you believe in.?

Example, someone can say they believe in a God, but then go rob a bank. Or someone can say they don’t believe in God, but they live a really good life.

I’m just curious as to what people think is a religious person.

What is it that you're wanting to know - do you want to know God, or are you just interested in defining the word "religion"?

I guess I was trying to answer the question in my mind:

Can someone believes strongly in god but is a really bad person be considered religious?
Can someone who does not believe in a god but who is a really good person be considered religious?

What is the definition of a religious person?

Is it more actions, (the way you conduct yourself), or is it something you believe in.?

Example, someone can say they believe in a God, but then go rob a bank. Or someone can say they don’t believe in God, but they live a really good life.

I’m just curious as to what people think is a religious person.

What is it that you're wanting to know - do you want to know God, or are you just interested in defining the word "religion"?

                                  In the traditional sense....
I think a bad person can be religious. But I don't think a person who doesn't believe in a God, no matter how good, can be.

I say traditional because I think that is what your question is about.

                                  Anyone can worship anything

Can someone who does not believe in a god but who is a really good person be considered religious?

A religion does not necessarily require God, in the sense of a spiritual higher power. Anything can become a religion, anything can be worshipped. Adherents of a religion don't even have to believe they are worshipping anything. Morals have nothing to do with religion. One of the most common statements made by atheists is "I don't believe in God but my morals are as good as yours, maybe better." And that's very often true. But it has nothing to do with anything. Belief in God doesn't mean you become morally superior, and belief in God isn't required to be religious, or for a belief system to qualify as a religion.

For example, you could decide to create your own religion where you worshipped ( or revered, etc) Coca Cola cans. All you need to do is come up with a reason for reversing come cans, and then convince a few people to join your new religion, then develop an organizational structure for it to follow. One of your tenets can even be that followers are to shun morals. It's totally up to you. Leftism has developed into a religion, for instance.

This is totally separate from a belief in God. Christianity is a religion based on a belief in God. Judaism is a religion based on a belief in God. Within each of those religions there are many different denominations - basically numerous organizations within that religion. Judaism has orthodox, reformed, etc.. different organizations or "denominations" but all under the religion of Judaism. Christianity has various denominations as well. U der the religion of Christianity you have Catholics and protestants, each of those have various denominations. Protestant denominations include Baptists, Methodists, etc. All are part of the religion of Christianity. But go even further up the organizational chart and you find that Christianity and Judaism are both connected as well, because they are both based on a belief in the same God, which is NOT a religion. The branches from that root disagree on various points, and form various branches, each branch with various denominations, but all actually one religion worshipping the same God.

There are many misconceptions about the religion of Abraham (one God, Jews, christians) but I'll focus on some that those not part of the religion believe: 1. "I don't believe in God, you do, and you're a worse person morally than me so what good is your religion". Answer: nowhere in Christianity ( or Judaism for that matter) does it say that by being a part of the religion does it teach that we become any different than, or any better than, anyone else. Christians are just as human as anyone else, just as subject to having flaws, faults, failures, as anyone else. Don't look at us expecting to find flawless, sinless people of superior morals, and don't condemn our faith in God because we don't live up to come set of standards you think we should have but don't. God never taught that we would become perfect. In fact, we are assured that we wont be. The only difference is that our God said we are forgiven. That doesn't mean we get some sort of get out of jail card that lets us be bad people and get away with it. But now we are no lo get talking about religion, and the point I'm trying to make is that it is quite common for people to confuse religion with a belief in God. We form religions because we believe in something. Jews believe I the God of Abraham. Christians believe in the God of Abraham. Leftists believe in the god of Social justice. Atheists believe in the god of self. They each created a religion to organize those beliefs and establish a following.

But it's not even clear what "religion" is in the first place. Look how freely the term is applied. People will say, for instance, that some forms of environmentalism are a "religion".

Fair. I’d say it involves a higher power / deity... or another way, it isn’t just an earth-bound passion or hobby like environmentalism or golf.
