What is this?

Anyone have any idea what these are? My brother just bought a house and the owner had these in the yard/garden.

They look like trellises for ground cover, but have never seen them.

They're gigantic paper clips.

My guess is the previous owner of the house was a mad scientist. Did he disappear unexpectedly? Do you ever hear strange high pitched cries of 'Help me!!!' coming from the lawn area?

That would be my guess. For a while I had something similar as a message for people (kids) not to walk through a particular planted area.
