        They're gigantic paper clips.

        My guess is the previous owner of the house was a mad scientist. Did he disappear unexpectedly? Do you ever hear strange high pitched cries of 'Help me!!!' coming from the lawn area?

          That would be my guess. For a while I had something similar as a message for people (kids) not to walk through a particular planted area.
