The First Lady soon may be a doctor.

Wouldn't that make her the best doctor?

    Because education matters.

For sure. Overseas, it is quite prestigious to show that your doctor was "US trained"

Really? That's interesting. I had no idea.

Yes, for sure. For example, Singapore and Thailand are active promoteing "medical tourism", where foreign customers (middle east, europe, US) can have non-emergency things done in those countries and usually lower prices than US. The top hospitals that do this will on their adverts say that the doctors are "US trained".

Why do you think that is? Is the perception that "US trained" docs are somehow better? THat's not my experience, of course, but I find it interesting that you say that that's what a lot of people use as an advertising ploy.

I've worked with a lot of foreign-trained docs. Everywhere from Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, the UK, Germany and India.

I've seen no difference in quality of care. I find it interesting that the perception differs.

Wouldn't that make her the best doctor?

Maybe educator is a better label. Think about it:

                    Hillary Clinton: Lawyer
                    Laura Bush: Educator
                    Michelle Obama: Lawyer
                    Melania Trump: Soft porn model
                    Jill Biden: Educator

                        1. If a large enough proportion of the “medical tourists” come from the US anyway, it’s probably reassuring to them that they get the doctors trained by their own country.

                        2. The US is probably one of the few countries that train a lot more doctors (specialists, if not general practitioners) than those needed to serve domestics needs, so we have more doctors to “export” anyway.

I appreciate having a First Lady with that life experience. I hope it can help reduce the stigma against sex workers and sex work in general. Maybe someday we will also have more judges and elected leaders with this sort of life experiences that will let them be more empathetic to sex workers and can better represent their interests. The nation will be stronger for having broader range of life experiences represented in its leadership rank.

@Axtremus actually I think there is a shortage of home grown American doctors which is why there are so many foreign medical grads finding tons of positions in the US.

as for quality, wide spectrum. No generalizations.

Interestingly when I did my fellowship in Canada, the Canadians I worked with felt that the Americans looked down on them as foreigners, while they tried to pass themselves off as just as “white” ( that’s figurative not related to race) as true Americans.
