Personally, I think it works to Trump’s benefit. He would be much better at tossing emojis into the screen while his opponent is talking

If I am VP Biden, I am sitting looking at the camera at the scheduled time. Camera comes in with a double screen - VP Biden in one side and the other blank. Would not be good look for President Trump.
However, I know that wouldn’t happen.

Trump is still a COVID-19 patient with potential to infect others. It would be highly irresponsible to do a “townhall” style debate in person with that contagion potential. Going virtual is the right and responsible call.
