Weird manual transmission thing…
-
I helped a friend out yesterday by driving their work car home for them (Ford Fusion) because they had hurt their left ankle at work and couldn’t operate the clutch. The gear layout had 1-2-3 on the top and the 4-5-6 on the bottom. Is that the standard gear shift layout now? It felt really odd… And I definitely had to think through the process, especially down-shifting.

Definitely not standard. I'd check in with ChatGPT. Is this a mod people do?
Not really as a functional transmission change—the gates inside the gearbox are fixed. But people do install custom or novelty shift knobs/decals with any pattern they want (including joke or nonstandard layouts). Several vendors will engrave whatever pattern you specify. So if you saw 1-2-3 on top and 4-5-6 on bottom, it was almost certainly just a custom/misprinted knob, not a different gearbox.
