Some 60% of Americans read at or below a 6th grade level. That's hard to believe.

I wonder how that has changed over time. My guess is it increased until about 1975 then decreased slowly.

We are in danger of a perpetual underclass. We've subsidized it to our detriment.

Some context helps a little. TLDR - USA is quite average when it comes to literacy compared to other 1st world countries. Canada isn't far off. Of course there is room to improve, but USA is pretty average with other countries.

Feel free to read this reddit explanation of it: https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoBestFriendsPlay/comments/1jan3xg/regarding_the_54_of_americans_read_below_a_6th/

Or the world chart analysis: https://www.oecd.org/en/publications/survey-of-adults-skills-2023-country-notes_ab4f6b8c-en/united-states_427d6aac-en.html

Or explore an interactive map of the USA: https://nces.ed.gov/surveys/piaac/skillsmap/

I agree with Dalio about 60% of the population being useless. Where I suspect we disagree is the X and Y axis…
