Cyber anonymity. It allows for the worst of us to come out and show it to the world with impunity.

We live in an era of always being on camera. In some instances, it has helped to perhaps address the worst of human behavior - but in the scheme of things as poorly as this woman's actions appear, they are by no means the worst behavior committed on that day. It is a sad thing that a camera may be present at those couple of minutes when we are not our best and be forever judged by those moments.

On the other hand, it is very, very rare that as a runner I see inappropriate behavior - but the time I did, just putting my phone in video mode seemed to make things a little calmer.

And while I have a lot of empathy and want to give police the benefit of the doubt, every once in a while there's a case that clearly demonstrates such an egregious lack of judgment as to call to question their ability to be in that profession - so perhaps a net benefit for the more transparent world in which we live. Sadly, the mob often overreacts.

I could see being pissed off if some guy random 10 rows away to snatch the ball away just as I was grabbing it, he was a bit of a dick himself.

I’d be upset I didn’t get the ball but there are 2 rules in baseball when getting a ball in the stands.

          1. Anyone has a right to the ball until it’s in someone hands.
          2. Always give the ball to a kid.

What on earth are you talking about? The ball was fair game until it was in someone’s hands. It was in the seat in the row in front of the lady, and he was faster at getting it.

Minnesoooota winters have eroded your ability to reason. That guy was ten seats over and the ball was already on the ground when he dashed over to snatch it up. That's an asshole move by any light.

I think yall are pulling my leg. If a home run ball lands in your row a few seats away, of course you’d scurry to get it (unless a kid was going after it). 100 times out of 100. Have you been to a ballgame before?

Two this month. And no, I would not do anything of the kind.

You guys take ball grabbing way too seriously.
But the etiquette advice is sound: don't grab someone else's ball, especially don't grab a kid's ball.

Seriously, @89th 89th? It’s about basic human politeness and also a little self dignity. The whole idea that he can get to that ball quicker than she can so he deserves it is pretty much the philosophy of the asshole of the guy that grabbed the stuff away from the kid that started the thread. You can argue that it was about giving to kids, but maybe she was going to give it to a kid that wasn’t there? And even then, it’s a nice thing to do, but it’s not a moral imperative to do so. It doesn’t matter that he gave it to his kid or that it was the kids birthday. It was because his instinct said I’m big enough, fast enough, that I can get that ball before her and he chose to follow that instinct. That’s behavior that a polite society is supposed to frown upon.

Not at all. A ball lands in the stands, it’s not “oh you go first” it’s fun to see who can get to it first. It landed in his row… in fact I think it’s a bigger sin to go into someone else’s row to get a ball, if there is any sin here at all!
