Life in 1776
-
The rich had open fires in every room, bedrooms included; as I saw in Washington Old Hall a fortnight ago, home of Georges great-grandparents.
But away from the fire, brrrrr.
In my parent's house during the coldest winters when they had only a living room fire, we'd put a scarf & hat on to go upstairs to the loo 🥶I'm currently reading the diary of William Wordsworth's sister Dorothy written around 1800.
She notes every time a cart of coal is delivered to their Grasmere house (by the suitably named Thomas Ashburner) -
Yes, it is hard for us to imagine life back then. Things that we take for granted were a luxury not too long ago and before then, did not exist.
I think even of some of the things I had (or didn't have) when I was growing up.

Not really related, but sort of... my brother in Denmark recently was laid off. They get like 3 months pay when that happens. I told him I'd share his website/resume with some companies in case they could use remote help. He said this morning he's not too motivated right now, which blows my mind. "Back in the day", sure 1776... you had to work to survive. How is he not motivated? If I was laid off, I'd be knocking down doors for my next job on Day 1.
