Darn now he has an excuse not to do it. I really wanted to see how that worked out.

Yep. Sometimes the way to win is give them what they want and watch it crash and burn.

In Ontario they had state run liquor stores - they presumably still do. While not actually as bad as you might imagine, they certainly didn't keep the prices down.

        I was only joking

They have them in Ohio and Pennsylvania too, although in Ohio they privatized them and opened a lot more of them. Pennsylvania is still very restrictive. The key there is they may be crooked but they're the only game in town.

In fairness it’s not a great analogy. The state didn’t start liquor stores to being cheaper liquor to all, it was a moralistic prohibition-era hangover. So to speak.

His idea is stupid for entirely different reasons.

It would have been interesting to see how the socialized supermarkets dealt with shoplifters. The politicians who started the stores are the same ones who barely think shoplifting should be a crime.

Well, they wouldn’t have any police to enforce the laws even if they decided to…

Not to be "that guy" but would these city-run grocery stores to address food desserts (which is a real thing in poor communities) have fresh, healthy food (fruit, veggies, pasta, whole wheat bread, chicken breasts...) or would it be cans of pringles, and bottles of fanta on the shelves?

That's a nice dream. Michelle Obama had it for school lunches too. It ended up being massive food waste.

The idea of government run groceries in these grocery “deserts” as an answer is absolutely ludicrous and dangerous. It’s an attempt to go around the problem without addressing the root causes, ultimately making things much worse.

Wasted food or failed demand? Could be heavy handed, but a strict program could enforce the health quality.

And you don’t see the very real problem with that statement?

People have to want to eat healthy, and in lower SES that is not as common.

Ha I get it, I tell my kids "if you're hungry you'll eat it" all the time. I know how effective that is(n't).

As Ezra and Matt investigated these sorts of things through their careers, they found that their previous talking points don't hold up to much scrutiny, and they migrated towards the policy center. Being smart and honest will do that. Too bad Ezra will never take any responsibility for his Sam Harris debate era self, who was a total SJW douche.

I remember one of Matt's talking points of many years ago on Vox, about how the stock market doesn't matter to anybody. He doesn't own any stocks, and nobody he knows owns any stocks. I bet he doesn't say that anymore.

Gary Kasparov, no friend of socialism, had this to say:

An NYC mayor who doesn’t believe in capitalism is like a Secretary of Health who doesn’t believe in vaccines. Sorry, bad example!
