I know, he's left coast Californian with a long list of gubernatorial management failures.

But if he keeps these antics up (link below), it's hard not to see the anti-Trump crowd coalesce around him in 2028. He's articulate, not geigh, and stylish enough to get voters to buy a used car from him they didn't know they needed. Although he does use hand gestures in an almost comically overdone way, if he's smart and shifts towards the middle enough (similar to what he did with Charlie Kirk on his podcast), I could see it. The dem bench is pretty weak, so why not Gavin?

And yes, I know we've talked about this pre-2024 election too:

Word on the street is that he is unelectable based on his political track record. As far as the anti-Trump crowd coalescing around anybody, it seems that by definition they'd coalesce around any Dem. There would need to be more than that to mount a Maga-killing campaign.

It's not even obvious that this CA rioting situation is playing well to the anti-Maga aspirations. I know I'm seeing lots of outraged faces at the military deployment, but I suspect overall, in the general electorate, this is being welcomed as, finally, an adult reaction by the government. People will differ, but I suspect that's the modal response. Lots of pent up, unspoken impatience with the BLM riots still looking for some release.

        Education is extremely important.

Yes. i was reading this morning that Trump's approval on immigration is going way up. Even CNN is saying it. Newsom would carry deep blue states but get slaughtered in purples.

I think there’s too much about California that will stick to him, even if much of it is cleaned up by then.

My fear is he’ll beat someone electable in the primary.

Though I try to remind myself to be humble about my ability to predict politics.

I remember saying in 2007/8 that Hilary couldn’t lose a primary but couldn’t win a general, and McCain couldn’t win the GOP primary but couldn’t lose in a general.

Wrong on 3 out of 4.

Shapiro 2028. He's just about their only chance, assuming things do not go south badly between now and then.
