So, where in the world is the most budget friendly, day to day? That would be Laos, the only landlocked nation in Southeast Asia which is nestled between Myanmar, China, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. According to the study, your daily spend here could be as little as £12.30 (that’s €14.60 or $16). We’re heavy on the ‘could’ here.
In second place was Kazakhstan, with an average daily spend of £15.10, and in third place was Rwanda, at around £16. Elsewhere on the list you’ll find destinations like Georgia, which is home to one of our top picks for a city break this year, and Armenia, which was recently named as the best adventure destination for 2025.

I spent a few months in Kazakhstan in the 90s and again in 2007. I came to like it quite a bit.
Northeastern and especially Southeast Kazakhstan are spectacular. The Tian Shan Mountains around Almaty make the Rockies look like foothills. I didn’t think the western or north central parts were anything special. Endless steppe that turns into an arid wasteland as you head south towards Uzbekistan. Huge country though.
