@Doctor-Phibes I don't think Trump runs such a tight ship that he instructs people what to say or not say. I think his staff have to absorb the rules by osmosis, and I think this guy is not very good at that.

Trumpigula has proven by the tumultuous number and scope of EOs this past month that he is indeed a micro-manager. The ridiculousness of a presidential EO banning paper drinking straws is but one example of micro-management at the highest level. There is no reason then to suggest he would not micro-manage what nominees will or will not say in Committee hearings.
He wants sycophants, and only sycophants on his team.

He's certainly confused, and afraid to say the wrong thing. In this case, the confusion seems particularly stupid, as "Russia invaded Ukraine" crosses no rhetorical lines his bosses haven't crossed.
