Well, the real point is, if he answers the question in the affirmative, this war is just going to go on and on, so that explains his inability to answer what is in reality a very complex, difficult question, and why only Trump can give us peace. You don't have a strategy, and that man has a strategy. It might be a terrible strategy, but at least it's a strategy. What is your solution? Joe Biden and Kamala Harris don't have one.

I wish Kelly hadn't cut him off as I wanted to hear what his response would be. "Well in my closed door session, you'll note that just before Russia crossed into Ukraine territory, a satellite caught a Ukrainian soldier on the border appearing to do the "fake punch" taunt to a Russian soldier, so technicallyyyyyyyy Ukraine started this shit. Don't start nothing, won't be nothin', I always say."

He certainly didn't look particularly comfortable with his waffling. He's clearly been instructed by somebody who is more accustomed to bullshitting completely shamelessly.

@Doctor-Phibes I don't think Trump runs such a tight ship that he instructs people what to say or not say. I think his staff have to absorb the rules by osmosis, and I think this guy is not very good at that.

This lamentable performance has nothing to do with him being told to say something that is completely unsupportable?
I beg to differ.

@Doctor-Phibes I thought I said that his interpretation of the unspoken rules were at fault. Also, that his interpretation was stupid.

Trumpigula has proven by the tumultuous number and scope of EOs this past month that he is indeed a micro-manager. The ridiculousness of a presidential EO banning paper drinking straws is but one example of micro-management at the highest level. There is no reason then to suggest he would not micro-manage what nominees will or will not say in Committee hearings.
He wants sycophants, and only sycophants on his team.

He's certainly confused, and afraid to say the wrong thing. In this case, the confusion seems particularly stupid, as "Russia invaded Ukraine" crosses no rhetorical lines his bosses haven't crossed.

They won’t say it anymore.
Hegseth also wouldn’t answer the question. Saying only ‘its complicated’.
