I’ve never had mine tested formally but 160-165 seems to max me out. Not sure what effect my lung tx and hemolytic anemia have on that.

    Only non-witches get due process.

Watts aren't a bike thing. They're a training thing. Just sayin'.

      It’s not a training thing, it’s a power thing.

Still, I can’t think of an activity outside of biking where humans regularly measure their power output. As a guy who rides you can probably imagine how amazing that level of output is, especially with your heart rate low enough that you could carry on a conversation.

Unless the conversation consists of nothing but 'SLOW DOWN, SLOW DOWN!'

      I was only joking

I once saw a video where a pro rider hopped on a smart trainer and produced 400W for over an hour.

I last 2-3 minutes top. (joke opportunity here!)

It's rather humbling what the pros can do, especially when you realize how much more straining 20 additional watts are.

There's a huge genetic range in VO2 max.

Yeah, absolutely. There are a couple things about bicycles that are just damn fascinating—that is certainly one of them. (Another, which is a favorite of mine, is that there are a handful of physical laws that govern what happens while on a bike based on its geometry, but we can't measure the interplay between those laws. That's wild to me.)

My gripe actually isn't with the lycra-clad type A Tour-following wannabes—one of the things I like about bikes is that the hobby takes call comers. My gripe is that the MAMILs do everything they can to undermine that very thing. "If you aren't pushing 300 watts then what the fuck are you even doing?" That kind of bullshit.

              Please love yourself.

You seem to have met very odd MAMILs. I've met many MAMILs, but not one like that. They are usually very easy going, with a "live and let live" attitude....

My buddy in Texas who rides a LOT has a great group, but they do call the slower riders The Snails. Seems uninclusive.

Don't do much cyclying (yet) but it makes sense people end up coalescing in groups of similar paces. Happens all the time in running...but rarely if ever are snide comments made about others paces. If there's open critique, it tends to be on those (who may be fast) but are constantly hammering it--leading to frequent injury.

Speaking of injury--broke my 4th metatarsal and fibula last month. (real estate dispute with a piano) On workout break right now, but will likely be doing some (indoor) cycling in a few more weeks. Bought the Mrs a pretty decent one for xmas, so hoping that can connect to zwift or whatever the hip new cycling apps are.
