Just wanted to say thanks for this thread. My mom is dealing with gout in her foot. So I mentioned indomethacin (@George why did you add exclamation points?) and allopurinol.

Indocin is an old drug. When my wife was on it 40 years ago, she was throwing up blood.

It also can shut off your liver, kidneys. It's a good NSAID, but there are much better alternatives.
Standard treatment is allopurinol to get the uric acid level below 6. That's lower than the "normal" range, but will prevent attacks. For the acute treatment, colchicine is recommended. It'll stop the process within a day or so. Colchicine prophylaxis until the uric acid is controlled with allopurinol, then stop it.

I'm sure many ailments of the human body are partially due to genetics. But when you watch your diabetic father enjoying oranges from the tree in December and he starts crying out in pain so severe the next day that is diagnosed as gout, the only genetics involved here are the stupid genes that were passed down to him.

My dad was a good father to me, but I was adopted by him and mom when I was 5 days old. I do hope his Mississippi genes had no bearing on my stupidities. Those were cultivated mostly in California. He did teach me how to hunt and fish and love grits and greens though. RIP
My Cara Cara orange tree is having a fabulous year. The oranges are bigger and sweeter this year. I paid more attention to its irrigation needs this time I think. Cara caras are dammed tasty oranges, more of a red color inside with a bit of tang as compared to navels.
