Indigenous People’s Day - Kamala says yes!

@jon-nyc said in Indigenous People’s Day - Kamala says yes!:
Trump said we should have a one time wealth tax to pay off the national debt.
Trump said the Iraq war was the right thing to do.
Trump said Bill Clinton was one of the best presidents we’ve ever had.
If you don’t like those principles, he has others.
By the way Biden issued statements for Columbus Day and also for Indigenous Peoples Day. Last I checked you guys attributed to Harris everything Biden did. Is that no longer operarational?
Nobody believes any of that.
Come back after November.

When I was at school we were taught that Christopher Columbus was a heroic figure, which I would humbly suggest is a considerably more revisionist view of his behaviour than anything Kamala has said.
My dad was a little less old-school, and taught me this:
"We mustn't blame Columbus,
He did the best he knew
Who could foresee the USA
In 1492?" -
There literally wouldn’t be the country she’s trying to lead had it not been for explorers. Tribes killed each other and stole lands all the time. They spread disease. It’s just how the world worked (and to a much lesser extent, still works…the strongest countries survive)
The application of today’s cultural norms and values to a time 500 years ago is so dumb.

By the way, I think the holiday should be called ‘Columbus Meets Indigenous Peoples Day’. Historically accurate and everybody gets a shout out.

Speaking of Columbus, DNA evidence points to him being a Sephardic Jew:

I have never understood the American fixation on Columbus. I don’t think he ever set foot on the North American mainland on any one of his voyages. To claim his legacy as the discoverer of America or even remotely with post colonial America is a stretch.

Is she wrong?
(I didn’t watch the video. Responding to the quote in the tweet)
She’s not wrong. But it’s like saying “let’s celebrate landing on the moon, but with it we killed lots of pilots, and that was wrong”. It’s like yeah…but that’s the cost of exploration. We should celebrate those brave enough to explore the world as it was inevitably settled/civilized.
Indigenous Peoples Day…makes no sense. The USA is not their country, they lost. They also aren’t native, everyone’s an immigrant as a result of exploration and killing those who got in your tribe’s way.

Agreed. It should be explorers day or something

It's 90 seconds long. TL;DW? I am sure you're a busy guy, but c'mon.
As with any verbal framing outside of math equations, whether it's right or wrong is in the head of the listener. She focused on how shameful the whole settling the Americas thing was. True? If so, then by all means, the listener can go ahead and feel some shame. That's the mark of the truth of that statement. Is the listener feeling shame? Are those who feel that emotion as they reflect on this history, the best of us, or the dumbest of us? Does it say anything about them at all? So many options for so many perspectives. I'm comfortable with my own, that luxury beliefs in the form of shame at the very particular colonialization that happened at a very particular time and done by very particular cultures, are a form of special pleading, and are the province of idiots looking for an outlet for their underlying psychology of depression or cultural self-hatred or neuroticism.

Trump said we should have a one time wealth tax to pay off the national debt.
At the time he suggested it, it could have actually paid off a significant amount of the debt. Now? It’s laughable.
Trump said the Iraq war was the right thing to do.
Still not sure that I disagree.
Trump said Bill Clinton was one of the best presidents we’ve ever had.
That’s why he’s running on Bill Clinton’s policies
If you don’t like those principles, he has others.
Oh yeah, most definitely.
By the way Biden issued statements for Columbus Day and also for Indigenous Peoples Day. Last I checked you guys attributed to Harris everything Biden did. Is that no longer operarational?
Depends on the moment.

The Indigenous people got their land by killing the previous Indigenous people.
Who got their land by killing the previous Indigenous people.
And so on.
Like it or not, bloodshed is pretty much how countries get land.
A president should know this.
Pretending that the previous Indigenous people are innocent is weak.
Ms. Harris is an idiot.

At least they were ritualistic about it.

Uhm, there’s no such thing as indigenous people in the Americas.
