He recognizes there are problems. He just doesn’t think that demonizing an entire ethnic group is the way to address it.
City officials acknowledge growing pains from the influx of some 15,000 Haitian immigrants..
Springfield Mayor Rob Rue has said the immigrant influx is straining police, hospitals and schools. He has also criticized the federal government, saying the city asked for help months ago. But he called on national leaders Tuesday to “temper their words and speak truth.”

Mayor Rob Rue told CNN the city’s population has grown about 25% over the past three years, in part due to the arrival of Haitian immigrants.
Between 12,000 and 15,000 immigrants are living in Clark County, which includes Springfield, according to estimates on the city’s website. Of that group, an estimated 10,000-12,000 are Haitian, according to a July presentation from the county’s health commissioner, who cited data from school and social services officials.
The 2020 Census estimated about 60,000 people were living in Springfield, and 2022 data from the American Community Survey indicated about 2% of the city’s population was born outside the US.
How many of those 12-15K are working in the factories to keep them open? In a town that originally had 60K people, I imagine blue-collar factory jobs were not that plentiful. Certainly not 12K plentiful.
Springfield has more than triple the crime rate of the rest of Ohio overall. Violent crime is 4 times greater. If you look at the graph I posted in another thread, there's a moment when the crime rates surged.
George, did you read the Asra Nomani article I posted yesterday? Springfield/Charleroi/TPS Labor is about to become THE story of post-COVID economy.

Dewine's opinion piece is paywalled.
Yeah, I was kind of surprised that he didn’t publish it in an Ohio paper.

DeWine:
Bomb threats — all hoaxes — continue and temporarily closed at least two schools, put the hospital on lockdown and shuttered City Hall. The two local colleges have gone remote. I have posted Ohio Highway Patrol troopers in each school building in Springfield so the schools can remain open, teachers and children can feel safe and students can continue to learn. ...
As a supporter of former President Donald Trump and Senator JD Vance, I am saddened by how they and others continue to repeat claims that lack evidence and disparage the legal migrants living in Springfield. This rhetoric hurts the city and its people, and it hurts those who have spent their lives there.
Trump and Vance are disappointing, and irresponsible. Not presidential material, not commander-in-chief material.

Duh.

I agree entirely. Too bad the other option is worse.
