    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13754947/donald-trump-immigration-legal-migrants-speech.html

BTW, I saw that speech. I think Trump's meaning was clear (helps to understand Trumpspeak).

    Here's what he said:

    1. The Border will be secured.
    2. There are going to be deportations. His administration will concentrate on illegals with criminal records. He wants the "bad people" gone, or if their home country will not take them, in prison.
    3. There is a need for immigrants, but they have to be vetted and they have to be the kind of immigrants the country needs.

The tough part is the third part. My opinion is that Immigration needs a huge overhaul, focusing on immigrants married to U.S. citizens, immigrants with needed skills, green card reform, getting a handle on how many illegals are in the country and reesetablishing the Braceros Program

One thing I fail to see is why people think President Trump was so successful during his first term as president in regards to stopping border crossings

Compared to Biden, and working with some outright hostility to a border wall, he was fucking stellar.

I agree with the first part. But President Obama managed to numbers as low as President Trump, and I didn't remember him complaining about the lack of a border wall. 🤷

But for him to "tout" how great he was during his first time is kind of false. That was one of his main talking points during his initial campaign and during his re-election campaign. The reality is is that the numbers were about the same as during President Obama terms.

I picked that graphic because it was pretty easy to read. But go to the Customs and Border Patrol. gov website. Same data but not in graph form.

The Obama Depression may have had a small effect on immigration.

You have your own alternate reality. Amazing to watch. Fascinating, to be honest.

LOL. I have to agree with @jon-nyc a bit. Regardless that the facts don't say that.

But, if I understand what you are saying:

During Obama: Economy bad --> illegal immigrants don't want to come to US
During Trump: Economy great --> illegal immigrants don't want to come to US
During Biden: Economy bad --> illegal immigrants want to come to US

Sorry, Obama presided over what many term The Great Recession, which lasted into the end of 2009. It was the worst recession the U.S. has ever seen. I remember multiple bank failures (except those "too big to fail"), Cash For Clunkers, a horrible housing market, beaucoup job losses, a 3/4 trillion dollar stimulus and much more.

If a recession can be termed two quarters of negative growth, what would you term the mess under Obama? Many did term it a depression.

                      I tend to agree...

It started in 2007 and we were out of it five months into the Obama administration.

I remember commenting in early October 2008 that Fidelity and Vanguard were essentially mailing Obama campaign literature to half the country (3rd quarter statements).

I think most people acknowledge that the recession was caused by the housing crisis at the end of Bush's term and not by Obama's recent election. Obama got re-elected fairly convincingly, after all.

                                I was only joking

Oops, meant to say "... the GOP lost the election in 2007." The WH and control of both chambers of Congress went to the Democrats.

Larry famously called the bottom by telling everyone to sell all their stocks - literally within days of the century’s low point.

It's funny, pretty much the only advice ever given to me by a bank manager was to basically do exactly the opposite of what you feel like you should do when buying stocks. He said so many people buy high and sell low it's ridiculous.

                                          I was only joking
