Ugh… this is going to be hard. His memory has gotten worse. He keeps forgetting who Karla is and keeps insisting that he needs to go home, his wife needs him there. She’s actually out of town for the week taking care of her sister-in-law that had back surgery…

Ugh, indeed. How functional is he at home? How old?

Okay. He’ll shave, take his medicine, go across the street to the drugstore to buy his daily paper, but his wife has to make him eat. If he was on his own, he wouldn’t prepare anything for himself, and would likely just read and watch the news.
He doesn’t like to go out anywhere with her anymore, though will occasionally go with her to her brother’s. Her brother had an accident, though, and his wife just had back surgery. So Adrienne has to go assist with them but can’t take care of all three at the same time.
We’re managing, but there’s a lot of distraction and assigning “chores” to keep him occupied. When he’s not occupied, he focuses on wanting to go home with his wife, she wants him home…
The really awkward moments are when he confuses my mom with his current wife. He’s 84.

When did he start declining mentally? Fortunately or unfortunately, cancer got my parents before any real mental decline could set in.

About 10 years ago, some slight decline. 5 years ago it became noticeable and the car keys were taken away.

This is some weird shit. Most of the night he thought I was his boss from Corning, but while Finley and I were playing a game of cube checkers, he came over to help Finley and kicked my ass. So I played him 2 games, one was a draw and the other I barely won.

That’s tough man. Aging parents or relatives. Could be worse, but could also be much better.
