She's drafted an email to the pastor with the name shown in the attachment.

It really doesn't matter what she says, it's the human contact. Someone cares enough to respond.

She just looked. Not a member of the congregation. FB profile has only 4 friends and nothing else.

She's going to forward it to the pastor.

Yep. Sounds scammy once the financial came out. I'm sussing out scammers trying to get into our charity FB group all the time.

No, this person's not asked for any money - yet. I'm sure it'll come out if/when the pastor reaches out.

All the things you mention are characteristic of scam personas.

So, using a throwaway FB account, I reached out to his person on Sunday.

Yup. Scam. And it sucks because the stories pull at the “what if?” heart strings.

Alternatively, you could offer to put them in touch with a Nigerian prince I know.

I am guessing they would cut off contact if you offered to meet them in person.
