...or if Trump is elected, I’m leaving the country.

This is not a political post. I just want to travel.

        I have a lot of pent-up demand.

I know people planning huge trips post Covid. For me though, I just want to get back to my typical travel schedule.

For me in this context? Being personally immune.

Of course I could still be limited if countries are demanding long quarantines for Americans.

Yeah, we are itching to get going too. Thinking about a weekend to Nashville maybe - somewhere drivable. We had plans to be in the ancestral homeland this summer - Newfoundland.

We won't have to leave the country if Joe is elected.

                    The country will leave us.

My dream increasingly is to climb aboard one of George's trains (preferably with a romantic name like City of New Orleans) and just GO. Ideally, from East Coast clear through to the West Coast, with the option of leaving the train and staying somewhere for a day or so and then climbing back aboard and continuing the journey.

You can get the equivalent of a rail pass. These fares are based on coach, and booking a sleeper would be a pain in the ass, because availability is so variable.

A "segment" is one ride. So, if you go from Chicago to New Orleans, with a stop in Memphis, that's two segments. You have the listed number of days to complete your travel. Of course, if you wanted to exceed the 15, 30 or 45 day limit, you could buy two passes.

Oh, since 2014, the trains I've ridden have the following romantic names:

                          City of New Orleans (10)
                          Empire Builder (7)
                          California Zephyr (3)
                          Coast Starlight (1)
                          Capitol Limited (1)
                          Hiawatha (1)
                          Acela Express (1)
                          Lake Shore Limited (2)

Let's say you want to get to Portland from Chicago, with layovers.

Board the Empire Builder in Chicago, departing at 2:15 PM, and arrive in St. Paul at about 10PM. Check into your hotel (which is part of St. Paul Union Depot) and rent a car for the next day (or three). Enjoy the twin cities. When you decide to leave, get back on the Builder for an overnight. You arrive in Minot, ND (!) the next morning and you can enjoy the scenery across the great plains in North Dakota and eastern Montana. That evening, you arrive at the Izaak Walton Inn near Glacier National Park. Spend a few days there in your rental car. You continue your trip westward a few days later, getting on the Empire builder in the evening. You spend the night on the train, and enjoy the next morning's ride along the Columbia River Gorge, with an arrival in Portland at about 10 AM.

That's 3 segments. (Chicago to St. Paul, St. Paul to Essex, Essex to Portland). You could take a week doing that, if you wanted.

As I said, my only problem with that is the lack of sleeper availability - it's hit/miss, and I really, really don't want to ride coach overnight.

Yeah, that length of travel I want a room. Willing to pay for it. Like on a cruise ship I want a balcony and a suite.

I could do the Chicago - St. Paul leg in coach. It's daytime, and I'd spend most of my time in the lounge car. But for sleeping, nah. Give me a room.

I was telling a coworker today that once a vaccine is truly being disseminated on a wide scale, we could see a euphoric societal reaction maybe similar to the end of WWII or something. The only problem is it won’t be a single day; because with mixed vaccine claims, distribution issues, and tens of millions of anti-vaccine folks, the celebration might just be spread out over 6-12 months.
